Module course for POL7511_01-OL_S1_202627 offered at LOC:OL by Centre for International Studies and Diplomacy (ORG:ISDS)
Convenor: Name: Dr Alvina Hoffmann
Convenor: Email: ah149@soas.ac.uk
Outline:

This module combines recent research on diplomacy and negotiations in international relations, by emphasising concrete settings, practices and actors to tackle broader questions of power, skills and virtuosity that make up what we call the ‘art of negotiation’. The first six topics will look at core issues and concepts in the study of diplomacy. The final four topics will look at the practice of negotiation, its various phases and power dynamics. It will unpack what the ‘art’ of negotiation and diplomacy is, how we can approach the various practices that make this ‘method’ and construct such relations, and interrogate whether or not the face of diplomacy has changed.

Students will combine cutting-edge theory with real-world case studies and practical skills that will equip them to analyse and participate effectively in real-world negotiations in diplomatic contexts – such as bilateral and multilateral diplomacy – which are subject to multiple continuities and changes. The skills gained will be transferrable beyond the professional field of diplomacy, such as in various organisations in the public or private sectors.

ILO1: Critically evaluate the conceptual frameworks, knowledge and principles of diplomatic studies.
ILO2: Combine theoretical approaches in solving multi-faceted problems and urgent issues in world politics, using insights from diplomatic studies.
ILO3: Systematically and creatively manage complex issues within the context of diplomacy and negotiation.
ILO4: Apply original knowledge to a variety of case studies in diplomacy and negotiation.

ILO6: Plan and implement tasks collaboratively and in a group setting for complex negotiation scenarios.
