Convenor: Name: Dr Loreley Hahn Herrera

Outline:

This module aims to provide learners with a critical understanding of how media, information, and communication technologies (ICTs) operate in globalization processes.

We begin by examining the historical evolution of global media, its role in global events and processes, and the tensions that emerge from this relationship. We will then explore the theoretical underpinnings of the current media landscape, with a focus on global capitalism, the shift from industrial to service information economies, and how media conglomeration and the cultural industries contribute to shaping local, national, and international contexts.

We then critically examine how global media systems interact with their counterparts in the Global South, and how identity and culture are built and challenged through mediated practices. We conclude the module with an examination of the debate concerning media regulation.

By the end of this module, learners will have explored how global media has shaped and been shaped by political, social, and financial global processes. They will also have a critical understanding of how media and ICTs build hybrid identities and cultures.

ILO1: Analyse the main features of media globalization with a focus on the still relevant debates on media imperialism and cultural globalization.
ILO2: Critically apply the political economy theoretical paradigm to the relationship between the media industries and global politics.
ILO3: Interpret social, political, and cultural processes through the lens of global media and communication theories and their application in non-Western contexts.
ILO4: Evaluate the role of global media in empirical (historic and/or contemporary) examples, using relevant media theories and methods.
ILO5: Critically assess the possibilities and limitations of media and communication theories in analysing global media and digital transformations.
ILO6: Analyse complex global media environments and events using appropriate academic writing and referencing.
