Outline: This module explores the theories, politics and practices of sustainability transitions, and the profound social, technological, and ecological changes required to achieve just and sustainable futures. The module analyses global sustainability challenges in the context of accelerating inequality, climate instability and planetary degradation. It critically examines key conceptual frameworks e.g. socio-technical and socio-ecological transitions, the Anthropocene and planetary boundaries, foregrounding justice, relational approaches, and decolonial critiques.
The multiple drivers, histories, and power relations that configure possibilities for change are explored. The range of influences and arguments that shape how societies imagine and act towards sustainable futures will be examined together with the assumptions, values, and ethical implications underlying different positions on sustainable development. A central focus is on the diverse knowledge systems including scientific, Indigenous and local perspectives, that shape transitions, how competing claims are negotiated, and the challenges to dominant models of development.
This module therefore provides the conceptual insights and critical competencies needed to contribute professionally to sustainability knowledge, policy, and action in various sectors and contexts. Students will engage with both theoretical debates and sustainability policy and practice globally and locally through interactive online learning and collaboration.
ILO1: Synthesize key theories and conceptual frameworks used to analyse sustainability transitions to construct integrated explanations of complex global challenges.
ILO2: Appraise the political, institutional, and power dynamics that shape pathways of sustainability and development.
ILO3: Examine diverse knowledge systems, including scientific, Indigenous and local perspectives, and assess their implications for sustainability transitions and just futures.
ILO4: Analyse, using systems thinking principles, global case studies to identify drivers, obstacles, and patterns in sustainability transitions across different regions and sectors.
ILO5: Reflect on personal and professional positionality and its significance for transformative practice in development and sustainability contexts.
ILO6: Communicate and justify complex theoretical ideas and their implications for practice effectively to specialist and non-specialist audiences.
