Outline: This module explores how climate change – and particularly the discourses and politics surrounding it – is reshaping global social and political dynamics through low-carbon transitions. It introduces key concepts and debates in low-carbon development and critically examines their intersections with power relations, poverty and inequality, social justice, and sustainable development.
Adopting a multidisciplinary, multi-actor approach, the module investigates how low-carbon strategies are implemented across different sectors and regions, and the challenges involved in translating these strategies into effective policy and practice. It also analyses the roles and interests of key actors – industry, states, grassroots groups, and social movements – in shaping and contesting the evolving global discourse on climate change and low-carbon development.
Assessment emphasises research-based activities, applied learning, peer feedback, and communication skills. Through this approach, the module equips learners to develop clear, evidence-based arguments grounded in real-world case studies; critically evaluate low-carbon development strategies; assess peers’ work constructively; and formulate well-reasoned positions on the politics and narratives that shape low-carbon transitions. Ultimately, learners will be able to engage with real-world challenges and contribute to equitable and sustainable low-carbon development solutions.
ILO1: Critically analyse the interrelationships between climate change, greenhouse gas emissions, and development in both global and local contexts.
ILO2: Synthesise theoretical perspectives, concepts, and debates related to low-carbon development, including implications for inequality and sustainable development in different contexts.
ILO3: Compare and critically assess low-carbon transitions across different contexts, and effectively communicate their social, economic, and environmental implications.
ILO4: Formulate and articulate nuanced arguments on the opportunities and barriers to implementing low-carbon development, drawing on evidence from real-world case studies, and communicate these effectively to a specific target audience.
ILO5: Critically evaluate the work of peers using established academic criteria and provide constructive, evidence-based feedback to support their learning and improvement.
ILO6: Critically evaluate how competing politics, narratives, and frameworks influence diverse approaches to achieving low-carbon development and develop a well-reasoned critical position.
